Leah O'Brien-Amico

I had a lot of success in softball at an early age and knew that I wanted to earn a college scholarship some day. That dream came true when I received the opportunity to play for the Wildcats at the University of Arizona. We won NCAA national championships my first two seasons and I thought I was experiencing the greatest feeling ever! It wasn’t until my junior year of college that I realized there was more to life than all the softball and academic successes I was a part of.

A teammate of mine, Julie Reitan, invited me to a Bible study led by Athletes in Action staff member Doug Gotcher. As I listened to Doug and others talk about Jesus Christ and how I could know Him personally, I made the decision to truly commit my life to Jesus. As I prayed for forgiveness I was changed and my desires led me away from sin and into obedience to God. I was thankful that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and that I understood His promise of spending eternity with Him.

Three years later, Julie passed away in her sleep at the age of 21 and I realized how grateful I was for her invitation to learn about Jesus. I now have the courage to be bold for Jesus because I have experienced a new life with joy and peace, and I know that tomorrow is never a guarantee.

I have now been a part of three Gold medal-winning teams. God’s plan for my life has been much greater than I could have ever imagined.
