I grew up going to church, and my parents would take me every Sunday. When I was 14 or 15, I started dating the girl who would become my wife, and I started going to youth group with her. I really liked it. I learned that I could have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I started building that relationship by reading the Bible and being active in church.
When I was 18, I began doing Bible studies with my manager and friend, Bob Santos. As I have grown older, I have grown closer and closer to God and learned more about what it means to have a relationship with Christ. That truly is a blessing.
Early in my career, my pastor told me I would be able to minister to millions of people around the world through the fight game.
I thought I was at that point when I had won the IBF World Title and was on the verge of making my first defense on national television. But then, everything changed. My wife was diagnosed with leukemia.
Everyone expected me to keep training and go through with the fight. The boxing world was saying not going through with the fight was committing career suicide. “People don’t pull out of fights like this for any reason,” they would say.
Not knowing how long it would be before I came back, or if I would ever come back, I told them, “I am going to put my faith in God, and if it’s meant for me to come back, He will make a way and I will.” With that, I went to stand by my wife’s side while she was fighting leukemia.
Through it all, we learned that prayer is a powerful thing if you believe. We believe that God has answered our prayers and the prayers of fans around the world as her health is continuing to improve.

Now as I continue my boxing career, God has prepped me out for every situation in my comeback. He has given me the right opponents, the right game plans, and even the grace to handle the media and other guys that try to talk me down and belittle me.
